We designed and installed a brand-new oak herringbone floor throughout a period property in Hackney, East London. The owners wanted to replace tired existing flooring with a timeless, high-end finish that would flow seamlessly from the hallway and staircase through to the landing and the rooms beyond. We supplied and fitted a classic herringbone parquet in warm oak, transforming the whole space into something bright, elegant and built to last.
The Challenge
Herringbone is one of the most beautiful ways to lay a wood floor, but it is also one of the most demanding to install. Every block has to be set at a precise 45-degree angle and perfectly aligned across doorways, around the staircase and into each room, so the pattern reads as one continuous, flowing design. In a period Hackney home with its own quirks — out-of-square walls, changes of level and multiple thresholds — that calls for careful planning and millimetre-accurate setting out.
Before laying a single block, we prepared the subfloor to a flat, sound and level base — essential for a herringbone floor that will stay tight and even for decades. We set out the pattern from a central spine so it stayed balanced and symmetrical throughout, then fitted matching borders and neat threshold details to frame the floor and tie the rooms together.
The Results
The finished floor is stunning. The warm oak herringbone runs from the staircase through the hallway and out across the landing and rooms, catching the light beautifully against the home’s deep navy walls and crisp white skirting. Sanded smooth and sealed with a hard-wearing, natural finish, the surface has real depth and a soft, contemporary sheen.
The result is a bespoke, high-end floor that lifts the entire property — a classic pattern that feels both timeless and modern, and one that is ready to stand up to busy family life for many years to come.
