Because the blocks run in alternating directions, sanding must be done in careful diagonal passes with the right machinery — done wrong, it leaves permanent scratch marks across the grain. Every parquet floor tells us what it needs. Some just want a light sand and re-seal; others need missing blocks sourced, old bitumen ground away and gaps filled before we open a tin of finish. Once the surface is ready, you choose the final look:
- Repairs first – we re-fix loose blocks, replace damaged ones with matching reclaimed timber and fill gaps so the pattern reads clean and continuous.
- Natural or coloured – keep the timber’s original warmth with an invisible-look oil, or change the tone entirely with stains from pale Scandinavian shades to rich dark browns.
- Protected for daily life – hard-wearing matt or satin lacquers for busy hallways and commercial spaces, or hardwax oils that are easy to spot-repair over the years.
What happens when you book a parquet restoration?
- First, we visit your property free of charge — we check how the blocks are fixed, look for damage, damp or old adhesive, and tell you honestly what the floor needs (and what it doesn’t).
- Second, you receive a fixed written quote covering repairs, sanding, any staining and sealing, based on the size and condition of the floor — no surprises on the day.
- Third, before we arrive the room needs to be cleared of furniture and anything dust-sensitive such as curtains or rugs. Our sanders extract nearly all dust, but a little is unavoidable — and sanding is noisy, so it’s worth warning the neighbours. We can remove old carpet for a small charge (from £35 per room).
- Fourth, we carry out the repairs, then sand the floor in stages from coarse to fine, working diagonally across the pattern so every block finishes smooth and level.
- Fifth, we apply your chosen stain and seal, and walk you through how to look after the floor. Most parquet can be walked on the same evening and furnished within a day or two.
