We carried out a full parquet floor restoration and finishing project at a primary school in Croydon, South London, bringing decades-old herringbone flooring back to life across the main hall and corridors. Years of heavy daily use by staff and pupils had left the original wood blocks worn, scuffed and tired. We sanded, repaired and re-finished the entire floor with a tough, low-maintenance seal — restoring a warm, welcoming surface built to withstand the demands of a busy school.

The Challenge
School floors take a punishing amount of wear. This Croydon school’s herringbone parquet had served for decades, but constant foot traffic, assemblies, PE and lunchtimes had left the surface dull, scratched and patchy, with lifting and loose blocks in places. The restoration had to cover a large main hall and connecting corridors — and, crucially, be completed to a tight timetable around the school calendar to minimise disruption to lessons.
We began by repairing and re-securing damaged and lifting blocks to create a stable, even floor. Working in stages with our dust-free Lägler sanding system, we removed the old worn finish and decades of ingrained dirt, taking the parquet back to clean, bare wood while keeping dust to an absolute minimum in the occupied building.
The Results
Sanded smooth and even, the herringbone pattern was revealed in full — rich, warm timber running the length of the hall and corridors. We finished the floor with a hard-wearing, commercial-grade seal designed for high-traffic public spaces, giving a durable, easy-to-clean surface with a subtle, natural sheen and excellent slip resistance for a school environment.
The transformed floor has completely lifted the space, giving the hall and corridors a bright, cared-for feel that reflects the school’s pride in its building. Hard-wearing and low-maintenance, the restored parquet is ready to stand up to many more years of busy school life — at a fraction of the cost and disruption of a full replacement.
