Preparing to lift the old floor in an East London E7 home

The Challenge

This East London project was a full floor rebuild rather than a surface refresh. The existing floor had reached the end of its life and, once it was lifted, the structure underneath needed real attention — joists that required repair, others that had to be replaced outright, and levels that had drifted out of true over the years. The brief was to put right everything below the surface first, then fit a new engineered floor that would run cleanly through the ground floor and carry on up the stairs, so the finished result reads as one continuous floor rather than a patchwork.

Work Completed

  • Removal of the old floor, with all waste cleared and disposed of
  • Repairs to the existing joists, with new joists installed where they were beyond saving
  • Floor levelling across the affected areas
  • Insulation fitted between the joists
  • New plywood subfloor laid over the corrected structure
  • New engineered wood floor supplied and glued down
  • Stair repairs, clad with matching flooring and finished with stair nosing

Rebuilding a floor from the joists up takes longer than a straight replacement, but it is the only way to get a flat, quiet, properly insulated floor that will stay that way. With the structure sound, the levels corrected and the new engineered boards glued down, the client has a warmer, more solid floor throughout — and a staircase that now matches it step for step. Start to finish, the job took 5–6 days.
